Emails may look suspicious for one of many reasons. Some questions you can use to help determine if you should to treat them as such are:
- Are you expecting an email from the sender? If so, has the email come from the email address you expect?
- Does the email include an unusual greeting, spelling mistakes or other unusual grammar?
- Does the email contain threats or ask you to supply information?
- Does a link within the email send you to a site other than the one you would expect?
Once an email is identified as suspicious you need to categorize it as either SPAM or Phishing.
A SPAM email is a nonsense email you did not ask for. An example of this is the latest fashion offerings from a shopping site.
A Phishing email has a nastier intent. It may try to disguise the sender and include information intended to harm or mislead .
Once you identify and categorize the email you need to mark it as such in Gmail by
1. Open Gmail.
2. Open the message.
3. Click on the
4. Click Report SPAM|Phishing as appropriate
If a suspicious email:
- Was specifically targeted at you and contained threats of harm.
- Was specifically targeted at you and contained information that is not publicly available.
- Impersonated a person you know.
- Was opened or otherwise actioned.
